About us

The goal of our chapter is to introduce and spread the appreciation of Ohara flower arranging for those interested in acquiring a deeper appreciation of nature through the studied application of techniques developed in Japan over many centuries.

Formal flower arranging began in Japan over six centuries ago. It has branched into a variety of schools over its long history. The Ohara School of Ikebana was established in 1895 and the Washington, D.C. Area Chapter was founded in 1969 by Mrs. Kosui Fujikado. Mrs. Fujikado was officially appointed as the Chapter’s President by then-Headmaster Houn Ohara. Our chapter is one of 89 overseas Ohara Chapters under the Ohara Headquarters in Japan. We celebrated our 50th Anniversary in 2019.

Our Chapter provides Ohara School of Ikebana opportunities for members interested in advancing their studies in the beautiful art form of Japanese flower arranging.

If you are interested in starting or continuing studies in Ikebana – the easiest way is to contact one of our instructors to discuss your goals. We have certified instructors in the Metro DC area. Click here to meet Ohara teachers in our area. Also, meet our chapter’s past Grand Masters by clicking here.

Our chapter offers both in person and online activities for our members including local workshops, member meetings, demonstrations and exhibitions. We welcome beginners with no prior experiences as well as those who have previously studied ikebana. Please contact OhararyuDC@gmail.com for any questions or inquiries.
